Bachmann is known in Saint Paul as disciplined and savvy, and I think we’re starting to see that. But based on her own words, we need to seriously vet her husband.
Michele Bachmann has jumped 14 points in the polls in New Hampshire, and she’s long been a threat to Mitt Romney in Iowa. All the more reason to review her wonderful positions on the gays and the ladies.
Others have been here before, chronicling her husband Marcus’s practice of “ex-gay” therapy and her own descriptions of homosexuality as being of Satan. But The Washington Post adds some more context to Bachmann’s position on what are loosely referred to as “social issues.” No matter how often Bachmann insists that she is “running for the presidency of the United States,” and “not running to be anyone’s judge.”
This is a woman who has called gay marriage “probably the biggest issue that will impact our state and our nation in the last, at least, 30 years.” A gay Democratic state Senator told The Post that she used to pray over his empty desk and told him that soon children would be “lured into trying homosexuality out.”
Despite her career in public life, Bachmann subscribes to the basic evangelical definition of a woman’s role — and that of her husband:
“He is her godly husband,” said Peter Bachmann, Dr. Bachmann’s oldest brother… “The husband is to be the head of the wife, according to God.” It is a philosophy that Michele Bachmann echoed to congregants of the the Living Word Christian Center in 2006, when she stated that she pursued her degree in tax law only because her husband had told her to. “The Lord says: Be submissive, wives. You are to be submissive to your husbands,” she said.
Luckily, her husband is totally on board with the political agenda. Michele Bachmann also once told a crowd that the “Lord… led me to this man,” telling him directly, “I hate to disappoint you, darling, but it wasn’t a big romantic surge that led us to each other. It was His word.”
Maybe the lack of romantic surge is why Bachmann looks so awkward sitting on her husband’s lap in this photo from his professional website. (Does anyone else see a kind of daddy/daughter thing going on here?)
Her husband, she said, wasn’t wowed either. “The Lord showed him in a vision that he was supposed to marry me. And my husband said: ‘I don’t want to get married. I want to wait till I’m 27. I want to see the world. I want to have a great time in life. I don’t want to marry this girl.’ ” The Lord won! And then said a lot of stuff about the gays going to hell, apparently.
Damn. Aside from all the disgusting and fucked up views on gays and women, this marriage is really sad and shitty. No attraction, no love, just something someone supposedly told them they had to do. What other things have they been told they supposedly have to do. In a place of government, that scares the shit out of me.
That picture is creepy as fuck! I thought he was her dad or something. And that’s not a lot less creepy.
